About Us
The Lan Cun Education Project was organized by two sisters, Tienlon and Tienfong Ho, and our dad, Ken after a visit to Lan Cun in 2008. We wanted to find a way to help improve educational opportunities for children in this often overlooked part of the world. We formed the Project as a Donor Advised Fund, managed and administered by Give2Asia, a well-respected US 501(c)(3) public charity, dedicated to supporting and managing public interest projects throughout Asia. Give2Asia chose to make the Project one of its Donor Advised Funds after thoroughly reviewing our plans, potential impact, and likelihood of success.
Lan Cun has a special place in our family history, as many generations were born there. Our dad was one of the few to attend university and ultimately earn a PhD. He told us many stories about what it was like to grow up there in the middle of mountains of southern China. The region was so isolated that his father, our grandfather, was the only teacher in the region. He taught school for a month or two in one village before moving on to the next. It often took him weeks to hike over the mountains, wade through flooded fields, and wait for raging rivers to subside, before he could make his way home to see and teach his own children. Today, Lan Cun doesn't rely on traveling teachers, it has its own school. But even so, getting an education remains a difficult journey.
After our visit a few years ago, we started working on ideas to help the children there have a better opportunity to grow and succeed. We discussed what the kids really needed with the teachers and administrators at Lan Cun Primary School for over a year, and together we came up with a way to make a big impact with a modest capital investment. This Project means a lot to us, and we will personally see it through, along with the help of Give2Asia.
